Eclat Cycle

Medium: Chamber
Instrumentation

String Quartet

‘Eclat Cycle’ is a set of 9 short pieces for string quartet. The piece began as a compositional exercise where I would sit for 2 or 3 hours and write a single short piece for string quartet with minimal or no revision afterward. What began as a set of 3 pieces, totaling less than 4 minutes, ended up as 3 sets of 3 pieces written over the course of a couple years. Each piece uses a particular technique as its starting point (e.g. natural harmonics, brushing, behind the bridge) and goes from there. The entire collection was premiered by the JACK Quartet at Northwestern University. The 9 pieces are:

A tiny scream
Augusta’s lament
Wisp
Fireflies
Mournfully slowly they roll
His royal badness
Branches in winter
Velos
Fermata
