About this Work

Reve I for solo flute was written for a young flutist who ended up not playing the piece, so it languished for a couple of years in a drawer until my friend and colleague Kate Lukas took it up and performed the premiere.  This short piece (about five and a half minutes long) is generally split into two sections.  The first is made up of constantly shifting textures, from slowly unfolding melodic fragments, to wild arpeggios and harmonic tremoli.  This finally settles into the second section, defined by rapidly repeated notes, which become more and more excited until they are taken over by a cascade of high, seething arpeggios.  The piece ends with fragments of the opening haphazardly arranged.  My sincere thanks go to Kate Lukas for her tremendous assistance in composing the work.
